Types of Solutions

Type of Solution

It is a homogenous mixture containing 2 or more components.
Binary Solution
It is the homogenous mixture of two components
  1. Solvent: component that is present in the largest quantity
  2. Solute: it is the components which is disolved is solvent
Type of solvent decides physical state in which solution exists
  • When the solvent is in solid state, solution is called solid solution.

    Solute

    Solvent

    Example

    Gas

    Solid

    Solution of hydrogen in palladium

    Liquid

    Solid

    Amalgam of mercury with sodium

    Solid

    Solid

    Copper dissolved in gold

  • When the solvent is in liquid state, solution is called liquid solution.

    Solute

    Solvent

    Example

    Gas

    liquid

    Oxygen dissolved in water

    Liquid

    liquid

    Ethanol dissolved in water

    Solid

    liquid

    Salt dissolved in water

  • When the solvent is in gaseous state, solution is called gaseous solution.

    Solute

    Solvent

    Example

    Gas

    Gas

Mixture of oxygen and nitrogen gases

    Liquid

    Gas

    Chloroform mixed with nitrogen gas

    Solid

    Gas

    Camphor in nitrogen gas
